Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy and surgical technique of coaxial and bimanual Nano-laser phacoemulsification.
Setting:
Prospective, non comparative clinical trial
Methods:
20 patients with mild to moderate cortical cataract formation underwent Nano-laser phacoemulsification under topical anesthesia by an experienced surgeon. Nano laser Phaco (A.R.C. Company, Nürnberg, Germany) is a nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG Laser which creates a plasma induced emulsification of the cataract either in a coaxial or in a bimanuell handpiece. Surgical techniques are demonstrated.
Results:
Duration of surgery was 9.5 ± 1.2 min ( 5-12). Decrease of endothelial cell count was 4% after a 3 month follow up. Both coaxial and bimanual chop technique can be described as successful for up to moderate cortical cataract cormation. The Nano-laser phacoemulsification is a technique without severe ultrasound shock waves. It creates very distinct circumscripte cavitation around the laser tip. The technique can be used alone or in combination with femtolaser fragmentation of the cristalline lens as a total single-use instrument surgery. Duration of surgery is longer as standard phacoemulsification but further investigation has to prove it"s clinical significance towards total surgical trauma, endothelial cell loss or visual recovery towards phacoemulsification.
Conclusions:
