Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe a new technique involving LASIK and accelerated Cross-linking in the same surgical session. Avedro, Inc (Waltham, Massachusetts) is able to provide a system which combines LASIK and corneal collagen Cross-linking, allowing thus to have a more stable LASIK procedure and also a remarkable improvement in prevention of LASIK induced ectasia.

Setting:

: ILMO - Istituto Laser Microchirurgia Oculare, Brescia, Italy

Methods:

During a standard LASIK procedure, after the laser ablation Riboflavin is applied directly onto the corneal bed under the flap. Then a 3 minutes corneal collagen accelerated Cross-liking is performed with Avedro KXL™, a highly advanced UV-A device. Post-operative results related to 20 treated eyes are shown and discussed.

Results:

Although being the first batch of results only 3 months old, at this time treated corneas do not show complications and patients’ satisfaction is substantial. Results are encouraging for the future, yet additional follow-up data is needed.

Conclusions:

Results and research in the field are optimistic about LASIK Xtra™ as being a safe and effective procedure. It could embody the full involvement of collagen Cross-linking into the refractive surgery panorama. Further follow-up data is needed to determine stability or effect.
