Purpose:
To confirm the ultrabiomicroscopic signs of pseudoexfoliative materials (PEM) precipitation on ocular structures with morphological methods.
Setting:
: The S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution, Moscow, Russia.
Methods:
The study was carried out on 16 donor eyeballs of human cadavers aged from 49 to 78 years and 18 fragments of anterior capsules of patients with the pseudoexfoliative syndrome (PEX) diagnosis clinically confirmed. Methods of study are ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), macromicroscopic preparation, cytohistological investigation and light biomicroscopy.
Results:
UBM of donor eyes revealed PEM precipitations on the ocular structures directed to the posterior chamber, similar with UBM patients with a clinically confirmed PEX. Structural changes of ciliary processes, ciliary zonules and posterior surface of iris were found corresponding to the UBM nature of these eyes within macroscopic and histologic investigations.
Conclusions:
Diagnostic possibilities in determination of PEM precipitations are confirmed in result of performed studies using UBM in different stages of PEX development.
