Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the efficacy of pleoptic therapies in a group of adult patients with amblyopia (Corrected distance visual acuity CDVA)>20/200)

Setting:

: Research & Therapeutic Institute OPHTHALMOS, Athens, Greece

Methods:

26 patients (32 eyes) aged between 18 and 45 yo were included in the study. Group A consisting of 12 patients (16 eyes) with moderate (20/2020/70) to high amblyopia (CDVA<20/100). Those patients underwent at least one cycle of VCK (VIRTUAL CLINIC KRUTOF) treatment (average of 15 sessions). Group B comprising 14 patients (14 eyes) with low (20/25>CDVA>20/30) to moderate amblyopia underwent Neurovision treatment. Parameters assessed pre and post therapy were 1) Corrected (CDVA) and uncorrected (UDVA) distance visual acuity (both groups) 2) Visual field testing with automated perimetry (group A) 3) CFFF (critical frequency of flicker fusion) test (group A) 4) Contrast sensitivity (group B) 5) stereoacuity test (group B)

Results:

Group A: 8/16 eyes (50%) had their CDVA improved by at least one line of Snellen chart. One eye had 6 line improvement after 3 cycles of VCK treatment, 5/16 eyes (31,2%) remained unchanged. All patients had improvement of visual field’s mean deviation. 12 eyes (75%) had improvement in CFFF testing. Group B: 12 eyes (85,7%) had their CDVA improved by at least one line of Snellen chart. 2/14 eyes (14,3%) had their CDVA unchanged. 12 eyes (85,7%) had their contrast sensitivity improved in all frequencies (1.5,3,6,12,18, cpd). 2 eyes (28,57%) experienced a small improvement in their stereacuity.

Conclusions:

Modern techniques of pleoptic therapy for brain adaptation in order to improve visual function can be applied with safety in patients with amblyopia. They appear to give promising results in most cases of amblyopia and improve monocular and binocular visual function.
