Purpose:
To assess visual outcomes in Dual Optic Accommodating IOL patients undergoing phacoemulsification cataract surgery by comparing against monofocal controls.
Setting:
: Hospital da Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa Lisbon, Portugal; Visual Sciences Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine - University of Lisbon, Portugal
Methods:
Prospective, non-randomized study comparing visual outcomes with the Visiogen Synchrony Dual Optic Accommodating IOL and the Alcon SA60AT Monofocal IOL. Includes 76 eyes of 38 patients (mean age = 68.1 ± 12.1) submitted to phacoemulsification cataract surgery and implantation of the Dual Optic Accommodating IOL and 60 eyes of 30 patients (mean age = 70.6 ± 7.8) who received the Monofocal IOL . These patients were followed for a period of 12 months with periodic assessment of visual acuity (VA) at different distances, refraction, functional vision and a patient satisfaction and quality of life questionnaire.
Results:
SE refraction was -0.15 ± 0.70D in accommodating and -0.19 ± 0.53D in monofocal patients.
81.1% of accommodating and 36.7% of monofocals had 20/40 or better distance corrected near VA.
Mean DCNVAs were 0.22 ± 0.18 logMAR for accommodating IOL patients and 0.40 ± 0.16 logMAR for monofocal. Additional data will be presented at the meeting.
Conclusions:
Dual Optic Accommodating IOL patients showed good refractive outcomes and better near and intermediate vision when compared with patients implanted with monofocals.
