Abstract Details

Purpose:

To examine the effect of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), as primary or secondary therapy, to decrease intraocular pressure (IOP) and number of glaucoma medications used (meds) in patients of the Hispanic Race.

Setting:

: Floral Park Ophthalmology, New York, USA

Methods:

Retrospective chart review was performed on 88 eyes from a consecutive case series of 3,034 eyes treated with SLT over 9 years. Eyes were grouped according to therapy method (primary or secondary). Two-tailed paired t-test was used to compare maximum pre- and average post-procedure IOP and meds.

Results:

There were 54 primary eyes and 34 secondary eyes. Mean follow-up was, total: 709 days; primary: 720 days; secondary: 690 days. Mean decrease in IOP was, primary: 30% from 18.8 mmHg to 13.2 mmHg; secondary: 24% from 18.5 mmHg to 14.0 mmHg. Mean reduction in meds was, secondary: 72% from 2.5 to 0.7 meds (1.8 meds). Results were significant with p<0.01.

Conclusions:

In this large, long-term clinical series, Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, as primary or secondary therapy, significantly decreased intraocular pressure and number of glaucoma medications used in patients of the Hispanic race.
