Abstract Details

Purpose:

Our purpose was study the efficiency of photodynamic therapy with methylene blue and dimethylsulfoxide in experimental bacterial endophtalmitis.

Setting:

: The study was hold in The State Institution «The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of AMS of Ukraine» Odessa, Ukraine.

Methods:

We made a model of bacterial endophalmitis on 10 rabbits (20 eyes) using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Rabbits were divided into 2 groups: control and basic. All rabbits received standart anti-iflammatory therapy, rabbits of main group got photodynamic therapy(PDT+MB) with 0,1 methylene blue and 10% dimethylsulfoxide. Photodynamic therapy includes subconjunctival injection of methylene blue and dimethylsulfoxide with subsequent laser radiation with wave length 630-670 nm for 3 minutes. All rabbits we took vitreous for bacteriologic study before modeling endophtalmitis, on 3 day and every 7 days of experiment.

Results:

In control group at bacteriologic study was growth of colonies of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. In basic group wasn’t growth of pathogenic flora. On hystologycal study we identified minimally cellular infiltration in vitreous, choroid and retina, and saved retinal architectonic in basic group (PDT+MB) in difference with control group.

Conclusions:

Using of methylene blue as a photosensitizer and 10% dimethyl sulfoxide as his guide, in the treatment of endophthalmitis in the experiment leads to reduces of the inflammatory process and sanation of eye tissues.
