Abstract Details

Purpose:

Evaluate functional results after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in children’s eyes.

Setting:

: Lithuania

Methods:

3 patients (4 eyes). Age: 12, 14, 16. First patient with high corneal astigmatism and amblyopia. Second with hyperopia, high corneal astigmatism, amblyopia. Third with hyperopia, corneal astigmatism and strabismus convergens. LASIK was perfomed under topical anesthesia in all cases. Follow up ranged from one day to one year. ETDRS visual acuity was evaluated. Corneal topography, biomicroscopy, visual side effects evaluation were performed.

Results:

Postop UCDVA was two lines ahead of preop BCDVA (from 0.5 to 0.3 LogMar) in the first two cases. Patient achieved binocular vision and postop UCDVA of -0.1 LogMar in the third case. There were no signs of corneal ectasia. Stroma of the cornea was transparent in all cases. There were no complains about visual side efects.

Conclusions:

LASIK could be safely performed for children in special and individual cases. It provided good refractive results in our practice. Longer follow up and higher number of cases are required to prove achieved data.
