Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy and reliability of penetrating keratoplasty (PK) procedure in keratoglobus and pellucid marginal degeneration

Setting:

: 13 patients ,operated by the same surgeon (O.S.A) between 2005 and 2010 in Cerrahpasa Eye Clinic, were involved in the study.

Methods:

PK was performed in 5 keratoglobus and 8 pellucid marginal degeneration patients, which consisted of 4 males and 9 females. Follow-up period ranged from 1.5 year to 6 years. Recipient corneal edges were ruffled to provide a thicker suturing area and sutures were buried on the donor side.

Results:

None of the cases suffered from aqeuous leakage and anterior chamber collapse postoperatively. Rejection episode was observed in 4 patients, 2 of them were controlled with medical treatment and 1 of them needed a regrafting procedure.

Conclusions:

PK with corneal edge ruffling was found to be a successful technique in keratoglobus and pellucid marginal degeneration.
