Purpose:
Meibomian gland dysfunction and chronic blepharitis alter the lipid layer of tear film by increasing the evaporation process ,causing symptoms of Dry Eyes.
Setting:
: Polyclinic of Specialties Nr.2 Ophthalmology Cabinet ,Tirana Albania
Methods:
172 patients were diagnosed with chronic blepharitis , 83 of them represent signs of dry eye syndrome : tearing mild to excessive , fotofobia , red eye , foreign body and gritty sensation, blurred vision . Sex presentation 80 male /92 female ,age ranged from 9 -78 years old . Slight lamp examination , Schirmer's test , TUBT test was performed. The patients was treated with oral doxycicline , topical and ointments AB , lubricating drops and ointments, FML drops and lid hygiene . The patients were observed for a period of 10 months ,alterations of symptoms of dry eye , efficacy of treatment and complications were recorded .
Results:
68 from 83 patient at the end of three to seven weeks reported significant improvement . Schirmer's test values increase of 2.6mm ,TUBT test values increase at 4 sec. Total resolution of chronic blepharitis was recorded 56/83 patients , resistance to local AB were observed at 7/83 patients, allergic reaction to local therapy were noticed at 9/83 patients , 23 /83 needed gastroenterologist consult as a result of use of oral doxycycline (mild stomach ache).A part of the patients showed no compliance with the treatment regimen and follow-up 19/83.
Conclusions:
The Meibomian gland dysfunction and chronic blepharitis alter the lipid layer of tear film ,by increasing the evaporation of tears ,mimicking the Dry Eye Syndrome . Proper diagnose ,treatment and long follow-up are beneficial to treat the pathology ,avoiding complications .
