Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate herpetic recurrence rates, greft clarity and visual success in pediatric herpetic keratitis patients operated with automated lamellar therapeutic keratoplasty (ALTK)

Setting:

: ALTK was performed in 16 patients, ages ranging from 3 to 11 years, in Cerrahpasa Eye Clinic between 2006-2010.

Methods:

Oral acyclovir prophylaxis was given for 1 year to PCR (+) patients prior to surgery. ALTK was performed for 16 patients and patients were followed-up for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 5 years at certain intervals.

Results:

The greft stayed clear in 15 patients during the follow-up period. 1 patient suffered from poor epithelization and graft-host disparity.Herpes recurrence was observed in 3 patients. Visual acuity improved in all operated cases.

Conclusions:

Automated lamellar keratoplasty is a reliable and a successful procedure in pediatric herpetic patients.
