Purpose:
To report the refractive and visual results of intraestromal corneal ring segment implantation INTACS® in a severe keratoconus patient.
Setting:
: Hospital Pedro Hispano, Unidade Local de saude de Matosinhos, Porto, Portugal
Methods:
Female patient with severe keratoconus (K-readings over 57D) underwent INTACS SK® implantation of her right eye (1º ring segment 400 micra and 210 micra). The left one, has been previously submitted to penetrating keratoplasty due to hidropsy. Uncorrected and Best Spectable-Corrected Visual Acuity (UCVA and BSCVA), manifest Spherical Equivalent (SE) refraction values and Keratometric data (K) were obtained pre and postoperatively. Minimum follow-up was 12 months.
Results:
Mean UCVA increased from 20/60 to 20/16. Coma readings decrease from 4,33 micra to 1,28 micra, with improvement of topographic values and contrast sensibility. BSCVA remained stable during follow up period. There were no per or post operatory complications.
Conclusions:
The use of INTACS SK® in selected eyes with severe keratoconus appears to be a safe and effective procedure. In the short term, this technique seems to be helpful in the reduction of corneal ectasia progression, thus delaying or avoiding the need of keratoplasty surgery.
