Purpose:
Evaluation of both safety and effectiveness of implantation of accommodative pseudo-phakic IOLs in patients who underwent cataract surgery.
Setting:
: Cataract Surgery
Methods:
50 patients were enrolled in this study (100 eyes altogether). Such patients underwent cataract surgery and, shortly after, were implanted a bilateral accommodative acrylic hydrophilic one-piece IOL. Natural far and near visual acuity (BFVA and BNVA) were measured after one month and 6 months post-op. Surgeries were performed by the two surgeon authors in similar number and with similar surgical technique. Average age of patients: 74 years.
Results:
BVFA ≥to 8/10 in 70% of the eyes; binocular ≥ to J5 in 70% of the eyes. The far visus is comparable to the traditional monofocal acrylic hydrophilic lens’. The near visus allows to read easily the fonts of books. The monocular near visus is significantly lower than the value measured in binocular.
Conclusions:
If compared to the implantation of monofocal IOLs built with the same material, the implantation of accommodative lenses is effective in far vision and allows a significant improvement in binocular near vision.
