Purpose:
to analyze probability of retinal detachment (RD) after laser or surgical treatment of secondary cataract (SC)
Setting:
: The S.N. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution, Volgograd Branch
Methods:
we evaluated results of SC treatment in 3385 patients aged from 9 to 83 years, performed in a time period from 2001 to 2010. Patients have undergone surgical treatment of SC or Nd:YAG laser discission of posterior capsule according to conventional techniques. No intraoperative complications were registered. Follow-up period averaged 12-36 months.
Results:
laser removal of secondary cataract was performed in 3364 eyes, in 2 of which (0,06 %) the onset of retinal detachment within 5-7 months was observed. Surgical treatment was carried out in 321 eyes. No cases of RD occurrence were detected.
Conclusions:
advantages of laser or surgical treatment of secondary cataract, according to the obtained data, by far overrun potential risks of retinal detachment. In this respect, surgical and laser treatment options, to our opinion, still represent methods of choice in SC removal, provided that there is a customized approach to ophthalmostatus.
