Purpose:
To evaluate the visual outcome after phacoemulsification and multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in patients with cataract.
Setting:
: Eye clinic DEN, Sofia; University Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology, Pleven
Methods:
Patients with cataract and a motivation for spectacle independence had cataract surgery with implantation of a multifocal IOL (SN6AD1 – Аlcon). The same surgeon (A.A.) performed all operations. The uncorrected distance (UDVA) and near (UNVA) visual acuity was measured on the fist day after surgery.
Results:
Twenty-five eyes of 19 patients (11 male and 8 female) were operated. In three cases there was diabetes mellitus and in one – glaucoma. The mean age of the patients was 59.1 years (the youngest was 29, the oldest was 76). UDVA on the first day after surgery was 20/40 or better in 96 % of the cases and UDVA/UNVA was 1.0/1.0 in 28 % of the cases.
Conclusions:
Multifocal IOL implantation in patients with cataract provided good distance and near visual outcome, allowing patients to achieve spectacle independence at distance and near.
