Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine whether a significant difference in visual outcome and biometry prediction error was present between the two lenses.

Setting:

: Single hospital setting with six surgeons.

Methods:

A retrospective study of 242 consecutive cases of uneventful phacoemulsification was undertaken. Visual acuity and subjective refraction were measured 6 weeks postoperatively.

Results:

65.0% of patients were male and 35.0% were female with a mean age of 76.2 years (± 9.6). There was no significant difference between the preoperative axial length, K readings and anterior chamber depth between the two groups. 85.4% of patients implanted with an AR40e lens and 92.1% of the patients implanted with a Softec-I lens achieved an unaided VA of 6/12 or better. 87.5% of the AR40e group and 85.9% of the Softec-I lens group achieved a best corrected visual acuity of 6/9 or better.

Conclusions:

Using recommended formulae, the lenses seemed to be comparable with no statistically significant difference in visual acuity and biometry prediction error.
