Purpose:
To compare two ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs) , HEALON 5 (sodium hyaluronate 2.3%, viscoadaptive) and DisCoVisc (hyaloronic acid 1.6% chondroitin sulfate 4%, visco-dispersive) in terms of effectiviness and safety in cataract surgery.
Setting:
: Hospital de l´Esperança – Parc Salut Mar - UAB – BARCELONA - SPAIN
Methods:
In a prospective and randomized study, 30 patients (fellow – eye comparison: Healon 5: 30 eyes, DisCoVisc: 30 eyes) with age-related cataract and similar visual acuity (VA) in both eyes, were included. A non-masked surgeon evaluated on a two-point scale different parameters: ease of injection, air bubbles formation after injection, maintenance of anterior chamber during continous curvilinear capsulorexis and during IOL implantation, ease of removal from the eye and quantity of OVD in syringe. Masked examiners measured safety-related parameters: intraocular pressure (IOP), corneal thickness and corneal endothelial cell count (ECC) up to 90 days post-operatively.
Results:
We analized data of the 30 patiens. There were no statistically significant differences between groups in their effectivness during surgery, except of the ease of injection where DisCoVisc was statistically better (p=0.021), and the ease of OVDs removal using the two compartment technique (TCT) where Healon 5 was better (p=0.021). In the safety related parameters statistically significant differences between groups were not observed.
Conclusions:
Both OVDs are effective and safety in terms of their overall clinical performance and they cover the whole surgical procedure alone. The only difference was observed in the easier injection of DisCoVisc, but more difficult in removing it from the inside of eye.
