Purpose:
To evaluate iop’s trend after 1 hour, 24 hours, 7 days and 1 month after cataract surgery in patients with chronic open angle glaucoma treated with medical therapy.
Setting:
: Clinica San Carlo, Paderno Dugnano (mi), Italy.
Methods:
Consecutive study on 39 patients with chronic open angle glaucoma performed on cataract surgery by phacoemulsification with iol in posterior chamber.patiens with complications during cataract extraction were excluded.
Results:
For 24 hours following cataract surgery, iop increased more than 25 mmhg in 30% (13 patients) of the study and surprisingly 13% (5 patiens) had low iop (less than 10 mmhg).
iop spikes were treated with medical therapy and normalized completely after 1 month (only 2 patiens continued afterwards).
patients with low iop normalized in 1 week.
after one month, all patiens had a lower iop’s value than they recorded before cataract surgery.
Conclusions:
cataract surgery for open angle glaucoma patients brings to an iop’s reduction and induces to medical therapy suspension for almost all the cases investigated (95 %).
