Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy of a new single piece Multifocal Toric intraocular lens in reducing pre-existing astigmatism in patients undergoing cataract surgery.
Setting:
: Multidisciplinary hospital setting
Methods:
Prospective case series study. Inclusion criteria were eyes with regular corneal astigmatism greater than 0.50 diopter, with no other co-morbidity. Outcome measures were distance and near visual acuities, intraocular lens rotational stability, residual post-operative astigmatism.
Results:
15 eyes in 9 patients were implanted with no complications. All eyes achieved unaided visual acuity of 20/40 or better, 90% of eyes achieved 20/25 or better for distance. All eyes could see J1 for near. 80% of eyes had less than 0.25D residual astigmatism. The remaining 20% of eyes had 0.50D of residual astigmatism. Intraocular lens positions were stable at 3 months post-op.
Conclusions:
Good visual outcomes and effective reduction of pre-existing astigmatism were obtained with this Multifocal Toric intraocular lens. Good rotational stability was observed. A high degree of spectacle independence and patient satisfaction was achieved.
