Purpose:
To report the visual and subjective results with the new Hanita SeeLensMF hydrophilic acrylic aspheric IOL with apodized diffractive optics, six months after implantation. The optic diameter is 6 mm, the diameter of the near add is 3.5mm. The add power is +3D at the lens plane, and about 2.4D at the spectacle plane.
Setting:
Ophthalmic Unit, Hospital and University of Verona, Italy
Methods:
After obtaining informed consent, 10 patients have been implanted in both eyes with the SeeLensMF. IOL power ranged from +18D to +24D. Six months after surgery, uncorrected and corrected visual acuity was determined and defocus curves were obtained. Contrast sensitivity and patient satisfaction were also studied. The optical quality of the implanted eyes was studied by single-pass and by double-pass ocular aberrometry. Any spectacle use or patient complaint was recorded. RESULTS Binocular uncorrected visual acuity was 0.06±0.08 logMAR, and corrected visual acuity was -0.02±0.04 logMAR. Distance corrected near visual acuity at 35 cm was 0.08±0.06 logMAR. The defocus curve showed a lowest visual acuity of 0.24±0.08 logMAR with -1.25 D add to the distance refraction. Contrast sensitivity curves were within normal range for monofocal hydrophilic IOLs. All patients but one expressed high satisfaction. Point Spread Function ( Strehl ratio at 4 mm o.z.) was 0.168±0.066 with the single-pass aberrometer, and was 0.145±0.061 with the double-pass aberrometer. No patient was using spectacles at the 6-month visit.
Conclusions:
The new SeeLens MF multifocal IOL yielded good results in this preliminary 6-months study. This IOL could match the advantages of the hydrophilic material with those of apodized diffractive multifocality. Lomg-term studies are required to investigate posterior capsule opacification.
