Purpose:
to describe the technique of hydro implantation of foldable single piece PCIOL without the help of viscoelastics and compare it's intraop safety and effficacy with the conventional visco implantation of lens
Setting:
Operation theatre of Thorat Eye Hospital, Amankha plots, Akola (maharashtra) India. It is a Govt recognised private hospital in rural India
Methods:
Prospective randomised clinical trial. 1000 eyes were studied over a period of 1year starting September 2010 upto date. the patients were randomised into 2 groups of 500 each. Group1 was implanted foldable lens with hydro-implantation technique in which only irrigation fluid from side port was used to form the bag while the group 2 underwent foldable lens implantation using viscoelastic material. RESULTS capsular bag and AC depth were comparable in both groups. Positioning and centration were better with Hydro implantation and also time required per surgery was less in this group. On first post op day no difference in corneal edema or visual acuity was noted between the groups. No case of iris trauma, zonular dialysis Posterior capsular rupture or damage to lens optic or haptic occured
Conclusions:
foldable single piece PCIOL can be safely and effectively implanted with Hydroimplantation technique with the advantage of increased efficiency, reduced surgical time and cost, no need for removal of viscoelastic from behind the IOL, no rise of IOP postoperatively.
