Purpose:
To measure the long-term safety and efficacy of IPL in the treatment of Dry Eye Syndrome (DES)
Setting:
Single center, private practice ophthalmology clinic
Methods:
A retrospective case review of thirty patients was performed. Patients received IPL treatment for evaporative DES at various intervals. Patients were evaluated for both subjective (slit lamp examination) and objective (Tear Break Up Time (TBUT) via Oculus keratograph and TBUT with fluorescein) improvement. The patient population was then followed for a three year period to monitor the success of the treatment and identify any potentially deleterious effects of the treatment. RESULTS 97% of patients in the review reported subjective improvement in signs and symptoms with IPL treatment. Greater than 90% showed improvement in all categories measured (Slit lamp examination, TBUT and TBUT via Oculus keratograph). No patients reported long-term deleterious effects. Less than 10% reported temporary dermatological sequelae.
Conclusions:
IPL is a safe and effective treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome due to evaporative Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.
