Purpose:
To report on the results of a prospective clinical study involving 85 eyes with cataracts and corneal astigmatism undergoing routine phacoemulsification followed by implantation of a multifocal-toric IOL.
Setting:
Atibaia – Brazil
Methods:
All patients enrolled in the study had normal preoperative fundus with cataract and corneal astigmatism between 1.00 and 5.00 diopters. Measurements including automated keratometry, axial length and the anterior chamber depth from the IOLMaster (Carl Zeiss Meditech, Jena, Germany) were placed into Raytrace calculator (Rayner Intraocular Lens, Hove, UK) in order to calculate the appropriate lens power. The final choice of the IOL power was based on IOLMaster, the axis of the incision and the calculation from the Raytrace calculator. Patients underwent implantation with the M-Flex T (Rayner) and then were followed up to 18 months. Post-operative assessment included refraction and visual acuity. RESULTS The follow-up period ranged from 1 to 18 months. The mean residual spherical refractive error was +0.37 D, with a mean residual cylindrical error of - 0.37 D. Two patients had a +1.50 error due to incorrect IOL power.
Conclusions:
The results of this prospective clinical study show that that combination of the Raytrace calculator and the IOLMaster provide good IOL calculations, leading to good visual results with a reduction in pre-existing corneal astigmatism.
