Abstract Details

Purpose:

To illustrate a series of unexpected intraocular sterile fibers of unknown origin after uneventful phacoemulsification and foldable IOL implantation.

Setting:

Divisione Oculistica, Ospedale San Pietro – Fatebenefratelli, Rome, Italy

Methods:

Video analisys of phacoemulsification procedures complicated by the presence of retained intraocular fibers. RESULTS Although all potential sources of fibers were eliminated from the surgical table, white fibers kept being found after foldable IOL implantation. Such fibers were frequently found behind the IOL.

Conclusions:

In the end it was understood that such fibers originated from a plastic component of the IOL injector, probably due to poor manifacturing.
