Purpose:
To establish guidelines for cataract surgery
Setting:
Data is based on the EUREQUO- European Registry of Quality Outcomes for Cataract and Refractive surgery. Data is provided by a large number of sites in 15 European countries.
Methods:
In a project co-funded by the EU and the ESCRS a database was created for learning and quality improvement within cataract surgery. Fifteen European countries contributed to the database over three years. Data was entered by the web or by transfer from existing quality registries or electronic medical records. One purpose with the project was to establish clinical guidelines for cataract surgery. Such guidelines can only be formulated for variables included in the database. RESULTS In October 2011 the database contains data of over 790,000 cataract extractions. Guidelines have been formulated for 14 different areas of the cataract surgery process represented in the database. The guidelines contain a short overview of recent literature data, How EUREQUO data fits in the overview and recommendations – if they are possible to give.
Conclusions:
Guidelines for cataract surgery have been established based on data from the EUREQUO. The guidelines include recommendations about 14 different areas of the cataract surgery process.
