Abstract Details

Purpose:

Experimental study of the efficiency and safety of the EBK* technique for corneal epithelial ablation using the Epi-Clear*device.

Setting:

Meytav Incubator Laboratories, Israel.

Methods:

Double-blind in vitro study performed on 80 porcine eyes by 2 experimented refractive surgeons. The EBK*technique for corneal epithelium removal was evaluated using the Epi-Clear*,a single use multiblade device made of biocompatible polymere, that rubs and collects the corneal epithelium.Measure factors:total procedure time, surface integrity, ablation diameter zone, quality of the edges and handiness.Measurement apparatus :video and histological controls. RESULTS The EBK* average procedure time using the Epi-Clear was 10 seconds with an easily reproducible 9mm diameter ablation zone. The histological analysis shows a good stromal integrity,no scratches,no residual epithelial debris, regular and smooth edges of the ablation area.

Conclusions:

In vitro, the EBK* technique using the Epi-Clear* device proved reproducible and regular epithelial ablation, and preserved the stromal integrity. These very promising results offer a new paradigm for corneal epithelial ablation and have encouraged us to begin a human trial for surface ablation refractive surgery.
