Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual outcomes, keratometric values and corneal data after femtolasik with Visumax femtosecond laser and excimer laser MEL 80.

Setting:

Neovize Eye Clinic, Brno, Czech Republic

Methods:

: A prospective database in 21 pediatric patients that underwent femtolasik with the Visumax femtosecond laser combined with 500 Hz excimer laser Mel 80 recorded demographic details on age, gender, type of refractive error, amblyopia presence, etc. Our patients were divided into two groups. Group A consisted of 28 myopic eyes, group B of 10 hyperopic eyes. There were 5 amblyopic eyes in group B. Outcomes were evaluated in terms of uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), preoperative SE (preop SE), postoperative SE (postop SE), complications occurence and retreatment surgeries. The postoperative follow-up was performed in 1 day, 1 week and 1,3, 6, 12 and 18 months. Due to parental non-compliance the follow-up was not completed by all the patients. In group A the mean preop UCVA was 0,10±0,07, BCVA was 1,17±0,1, mean preop SE was -4,31±1,59 dioptres (D) and mean keratometry (K) was 43,75±1,30 D. In group B the mean preop UCVA was 0,47±0,37, BCVA was 0,85±0,47, mean preop SE was +4,24±1,45 D and mean K 43,1±1,11 D. RESULTS In one month postoperatively, in myopic group A the mean postop UCVA was 1,18±0,20, BCVA was 1,2±0,04, mean postop SE was -0,18±0,44 D and mean K was 40,70±1,97 D. In 12 months postoperatively the mean postop UCVA was 0,96±0,16, BCVA was 1,2±0,05, mean postop SE was -0,09±0,32 D and mean K was 40,79±2,91 D. In one month postoperatively,in hyperopic group B the mean postop UCVA was 0,75±0,46, BCVA was 0,79±0,33, mean postop SE was +1,11±1,81 D and mean K was 45,71±1,70 D. In 12 months postoperatively the mean postop UCVA was 0,6±0,35, BCVA was 0,65±0,22, mean postop SE was +1,21±2,11 D and mean K was 45,54±1,91D. We performed 2 retreatmens in 2 eyes and solved 1 flap complication of minor importance.

Conclusions:

There were no serious complications: no defective flaps, no buttoholes, no uncompleted flaps, no case of DLK and no infection. According to preliminary results femtolasik with Visumax FS laser and excimer MEL 80 in children is safe and efficiently provides excellent visual and refractive outcomes. Reasonable indication, motivation factor, patient and family cooperation is essential.
