Abstract Details

"Purpose:

Report preliminary short term clinical results in presbyopes treated with SUPRACOR

Setting:

Private clinical practice in Barcelona, Spain.

Methods:

Prospective, longitudinal, comparative case series. Selection was based on inclusion criteria: +1.0D to +2.5D mean refractive spherical equivalent MRSE, ≤ 1.0 D astigmatism, Km 42.0 - 44.0D, near addition (Add) of +2.0D needed), both eyes with best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) >= 0.8(decimal), and normal corneal topography parameters for LASIK procedure.SUPRACOR was performed as a standard LASIK surgery with the Technolas 217P Excimer Laser. Data was reported as pre and postoperative mean and standard deviation (SD); t-student (paired samples) was calculated for statistical significance, using the SPSS v. 19; (p>0.05 for statistical significance). RESULTS Twelve patients, 5 male and 7 female with mean age of 53.5 years were followed-up for 6 months after SUPRACOR procedure for presbyopia. Pre operative results included: monocular uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) 0.55 (0.23 SD), spherical equivalent (SE) 1.21 (0.57SD), pupil 5.3 (0.57SD), astigmatism -0.36D, Add 1.63D (0.5SD), Km 43.93 (0.76SD), pachymetry 561µ (26SD), topographic Km -0.81D (0.33SD). Postoperative results for different variables on day 7, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months were: monocular far UCVA (0.79,0.7,0.76,0.71; p= 0.00)), monocular near UCVA (0.9,0.9,0.9,0.93; p= 0.00), bilateral far UCVA (0.93,0.90,0.90,0.8), bilateral near UCVA (0.95,0.95,1.0; p=0.00), SE (-0.4,-0.45,-0.29,-0.47; p= 0.00)), astigmatism (-0.4,-0.35,-0.30,-0.54; p>0.05) and Km (45.17, 44.9, 46.3 D; p=0.05). Mean Add after one month was 0.53, 0.84 after 3 months (p=0.00), and 0.58D after 6 months.

Conclusions:

Preliminary results conclude that SUPRACOR, for presbyopia, significantly improves far and near UCVA, after a 6-month follow-up, while reducing the need for glasses.
