Abstract Details

Purpose:

An enhancement to the optical shape of the Synchrony Dual Optic Accommodating IOL was performed to mimic the natural eye’s increase in negative spherical aberration during near viewing. Initial safety and visual acuity of patients implanted with the new Synchrony IOL are evaluated in this study.

Setting:

Hospital da Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa (HCVP), Lisbon, Portugal

Methods:

11 eyes of 8 subjects were implanted with next generation Synchrony IOL. Mean ( SD) age of the subjects at the time of surgery was 71.8  4.2 yrs. Uncorrected and distance corrected monocular visual acuities were measured 1-month post-operatively at 4m, 80cm and 40cm with ETDRS charts under controlled illumination. Eye health and any post-operative complications were evaluated using a slit lamp. In addition to the 1-month data, visual acuity and contrast sensitivity measurements made at the 6-month post-operative visit will also be presented at the meeting. RESULTS The average best corrected visual acuity was 20/16 or better. Uncorrected and distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity of 20/25 or better was achieved by 90.9% eyes. Likewise, uncorrected and distance-corrected near visual acuity of 20/40 or better was achieved by 81.8% of eyes. At the 1-month post-operative visit no complications were apparent and slit lamp evaluations were unremarkable.

Conclusions:

The next generation Synchrony IOL with enhanced optic shape was successfully implanted with no post-operative complications and it provides a full range of clear vision without any compromise to retinal image quality.
