Abstract Details

Purpose:

To develop and assess the efficacy of surgical technology in children with uveitis, complicated by cataract.

Setting:

Irkutsk Branch of S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution

Methods:

15 children at the age 5-16 years with uveitis of different etiology, complicated by cataract were operated. Visual acuity before surgery varied from photoperception with correct projection to 0,05. Surgical operation was made through microincisions 1,8mm and 1,2mm. Particular features of surgery were excision of fibrous membrane by pliers, formation of anterior and posterior capsulorhexis within pupil without removal of posterior plane synechia. Acrysof IQ IOL was implanted into capsular bag after phacoaspiration. In case of intensive opacity of vitreous body the posterior 25G or 27G vitrectomy was made simultaneously.

Results:

After surgery there were the small exudation and ophthalmohypertension in 5 cases (33%). Formation of fibrous film in pupillary area and development of iris bombage were noted in 2 children (13%) at follow-up period. All complications were removed. Visual acuity increased in 73% cases and was 0,2+/-0,02 (p<0,05) with correction.

Conclusions:

Proposed technology secures the increase of visual functions and decrease of complications in these patients. It allows recommending it for clinical practice. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
