Mats Lundström trained as a resident (1970) at Sahlgren’s University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden. After obtaining a PhD degree in 1977 he became associate professor at the Department of Ophthalmology, Sahlgren’s University Hospital, Gothenburg, in 1980. He was head of the Department of Ophthalmology in Karlskrona (1980-2003) and Director of, Registry Centre, EyeNet Sweden (2004-2010).
Mats Lundström was president of the Swedish Ophthalmological Society (1992-1996) and has been Honorary Member since 2011. He was an expert in Ophthalmology for the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare (1991-2000) and has been a member of a number of scientific boards and committees.
Mats Lundström has mainly been involved in cataract surgery outcomes. He was a co-founder of the Swedish National Cataract Register in 1992 and manager of the registry (1992-2010). He initiated and became chairman of the European Cataract Outcome Study in 1995 and has been clinical director of the EUREQUO project since 2008.
Mats Lundström became adjunct professor in Ophthalmology at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University, Sweden (2004) and he has been an author or co-author to more than 90 scientific papers in peer-review journals.
