Abstract Details

Purpose:

Incidence of diabetes is increasing all over the world. Its complications such as retinopathy and cardiac dysfunction are increasing, too. Because of high mortality and morbidity of cardiovascular diseases in diabetic patients, we decide to evaluate the prevalence of cardiac structural abnormalities and cardiac dysfunction in the diabetic patients with non proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and clinically significant macular edema (CSME).

Setting:

In this descriptive study, 60 diabetic patients with non proliferative diabetic retinopathy and clinically significant macular edema enrolled

Methods:

In this descriptive study, 60 diabetic patients with non proliferative diabetic retinopathy and clinically significant macular edema enrolled. All of them underwent echocardiography and electrocardiography. Results were analyzed

Results:

Mean age of patients was 59.5±7.6 years old (range 43-75 years). Forty-one (68.33%) were male and 19(31.67%) were female. Duration of diabetes was less than 5 years in 20% of cases while 21.67% had diabetes for more than 15 years. 40 (66.67%) patients had diastolic dysfunction while 4 (6.6%) had systolic dysfunction. Ventricular hypertrophy was reported in 27(45%) patients.

Conclusions:

Cardiac dysfunction is common in diabetic patients with non proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Since most of them are asymptomatic, it is recommended to screen diabetic patients with retinopathy for cardiac dysfunction FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
