Purpose:
?o evaluate the implication of cataract in patientsÂ’ quality of life, using the VFQ-25, and investigate the possible associated risk factors.
Setting:
1Department of Ophthalmology, General Hospital of Veroia, Veroia, Greece
2Department of Ophthalmology, Barts and the London NHS Trust, London, UK
3Department of Epidemiology, University of Athens, Athens, Greece
4Department of Ophthalmology, University of Athens, Athens, Greece
Methods:
Participants in our study were 220 patients eligible for cataract surgery, 106 male and 114 females, with mean age 76.5±6.6 years. All patients completed the VFQ-25 questionnaire, in order to assess their functional vision. All VFQ-25 subscale scores were measured. A score of 0 indicates the worst possible score and a score of 100 the best possible score. The following data were recorded and evaluated as possible risk factors: age, sex, educational and marital status, working status, alcohol consumption, current smoking, exercice, income, expenses and presence of diabetes mellitus. Univariate as well as multivariate analysis were performed with STATA 11.1 statistical software.
Results:
The mean VFQ-25 score was 73.3 (SD 3.3). Education was risk factor for general health (p=0.006), diabetes mellitus for distance activities (p=0.049), expenses for vision specific social functioning (p=0.046), working status for vision specific mental health and vision specific dependency (p=0.001 and p=0.009 respectively) and gender for peripheral vision (p=0.038).
Conclusions:
Cataract and therefore visual impairment has a certain impact on daily lives of respective population. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
