Abstract Details

Purpose:

This retrospective study was conducted to evaluate patient outcomes following PRK enhancement for patients implanted with an Alcon AcrySof Toric IOL.

Setting:

Miami, Florida, United States

Methods:

All eyes that received an AcrySof toric IOL and subsequently received laser vision correction enhancements were included in this study. All enhancements were conducted between February 2008 and October 2010. The primary outcome measures included diopters of astigmatism and UCDVA.

Results:

From January 2007 to November 2011, 677 eyes were implanted with a toric IOL. Seven eyes from seven patients with toric IOLs underwent PRK enhancement and were evaluated; average age was 71; 71.4% of the patients were female. None (0.0%) of the patients had an UCDVA of 20/30 or better pre-enhancement. Five of seven (71.4%) eyes had an improvement of one or more lines of UCVA. One eye, with BCVA of 20/40 post-IOL implantation, was excluded due to a pre-existing corneal condition from a LASIK flap complication. Four of the remaining six (66.7%) eyes had 1D or more of astigmatism preoperatively, compared to just one of six (16.7%) eyes with 1D or more of astigmatism post-laser correction. Three of six eyes (50%) had an UCDVA of 20/30 or better post-enhancement.

Conclusions:

PRK enhancement effectively improves uncorrected visual acuity and degree of astigmatism in patients with residual refractive errors following Alcon AcrySof toric IOL implantation. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
