Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) procedure for the correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism: 3-month results

Purpose:

To report the Visual and Refractive outcomes of small incision lenticule extraction to correct refractive errors using a femtosecond laser in the first 30 eyes of the American Continent.

Setting:

Instituto de Oftalmologia, Fundación Conde de Valenciana IAP, Mexico City, México.

Methods:

A refractive lenticule of intrastromal corneal tissue was cut utilising a Carl Zeiss Meditec VisuMax femtosecond laser system. Simultaneously an small ‘pocket’ incisionwas created. Thereafter, the lenticule was manually dissected with a Shanzu dissector and removed from the stroma through a 3.5 to 5.2 mm incision using 0.12 forceps. Outcome measures were corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), and manifest refraction during 3 months of follow-up. Corneal topography was also measured.

Results:

The study enrolled 30 eyes of 34 patients. The mean spherical equivalent was - 4.26 diopters (D) 1.43 standard deviation (SD) preoperatively and spherical equivalent +0.17 (D) 0.45 (SD) 3 months postoperatively. Refractive stability was achieved within 6 weeks. Three months after surgery, 72% of all cases had a UDVA of 20/25 or better. The 3-month postoperative CDVA was the same as or better than the preoperative CDVA in all the eyes. No eyes lost lines of CDVA.

Conclusions:

Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE), a flapless minimally invasive technique, was safe, predictable, and effective in treating myopia and myopic astigmatism. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
