Purpose:
To report 2 cases of conjunctival necrosis following subconjunctival Depo-medrol Injections.
Setting:
Opthalmic Department - King Abdulaziz Medical City. Dammam. KSA
Methods:
2 patients received subconjuctival Depo-medrol Injections (40 mg Methylprednisolone acetate) for intractable postoperative uveitis following uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery. 2 days later patients presented with severe hyperemia at the injection site followed by conjunctival necrosis. There was no evidence of infection. Conservative treatment using preservative free lubricants was attempted in the first patient for 2 weeks followed by debridement of necrotic tissue. Second patient had his conjunctiva debrided along with the remnants of injected substance immediately after early sign of conjunctival necrosis was noted.
Results:
Patient who underwent early conjunctival debridement had faster recovery with complete healing of conjunctival tissue in 3 weeks as compared to 9 weeks in the other case of delayed intervention.
Conclusions:
Conjunctival necrosis is a possible complication of subconjunctival Depo-medrol injections. Early debidement of necrotic tissue and removal of residual inciting chemical limit tissue damage and accelerate conjunctival healing FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
