Purpose:
To evaluate visual performance and patient satisfaction after implantation of an aspheric single piece multifocal lens with full diffractive pattern.
Setting:
Private eye clinics in Ahaus (Germany), Antwerp (Belgium), and Madrid (Spain) and Midland Eye Institute/Aston University in Birmingham (UK)
Methods:
Thirty-seven patients underwent bilateral cataract surgery and implantation of Tecnis ZMB00. Patients were followed-up after 1 day and 3 months. Major endpoints were uncorrected and best-corrected distance and near vision under photopic and mesopic conditions, as well as defocus curves and reading speed and acuity. Patients filled in a vision satisfaction questionnaire before and 3 months after surgery.
Results:
The patients achieved a mean uncorrected distance vision (decimal notation) of 1.02 ± 0.19 under photopic and 0.89 ± 0.16 under mesopic conditions, best-corrected vision was 1.16 ± 0.21 (photopic) and 1.04 ± 0.17 (mesopic). Uncorrected near vision (decimal notation) was 0.99±0.16 (photopic) and 0.80 ± 0.18 (mesopic). If near vision was corrected for distance, results were not significantly different to the uncorrected vision. Defocus curves showed a wide range of clear vision and patients achieved fluent reading speeds. Post-operative day and night glare were not different to the pre-operative situation. After surgery, none of the patients used spectacles for distance, and only 2 needed glasses for near tasks. Pre-operatively, only 6% of the patients found it easy to drive at night, whereas 76% regarded it as easy after surgery.
Conclusions:
Tecnis ZMB00 provides excellent near and distance vision under mesopic and photopic conditions. The patient questionnaire revealed a significant improvement of satisfaction with vision at all distances and light conditions after surgery. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
