Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study implantation and visual results of a diffractive aspheric multifocal IOL, made of hydrophobic acrylic material.

Setting:

Institute of Ophthalmology, University of Foggia, Foggia, Italy

Methods:

A diffractive single-piece multifocal IOL (Tecnis ZMB00) was implanted bilaterally in 24 patients. Post-operative refraction was targeted at emetropia. Post-operative stability of the lens was documented. After 3 months we measured uncorrected near, intermediate and distance vision, as well as best corrected distance vision. Patient satisfaction with regards to their visual quality was scored on a scale from 1 (very unhappy) to 10 (very happy).

Results:

The mean age of the patients was 66.6±9.4 years with a range of 44-84 years. Gender distribution was 16 females and 8 males. The capsulorhexis had a mean diameter of 5.3±0.3 mm and was centered in all cases. After 3 months, none of the lenses showed any visible decentration or tilt. Best-corrected distance visual acuity (decimal scale) was 0.99±0.09. Uncorrected visual acuities were 0.98±0.06 for distance, 0.69±0.11 for intermediate, and 0.90±0.1 for near vision (all decimal scale). The patient satisfaction score was 8.5±0.7.

Conclusions:

In our study, patients achieved very high levels of uncorrected visual acuity, even at intermediate distance which resulted in a high patient satisfaction. Lens position was stable with no visible decentration or tilt. Visual performance with this lens is fully sufficient for everyday life activities at all distances. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
