Purpose:
To study the relationship between type of astigmatism and central corneal thickness
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Yildirim Beyazit University, Ankara, Turkey
Methods:
Medical records of 201 successive cases, dating between August 2011 and January 2012 were studied retrospectively. These cases were prospective excimer laser patients who underwent through a full ophthalmological examination. In these examinations, magnitude of refractive errors, uncorrected distance visual acuities, best corrected distance visual acuties were determined. Refractive errors were evaluated either by type of ametropia as myopia, hyperopia, and mixed astigmatism, or by type of astigmatism as with-the-rule, agaist-the-rule, and oblique astigmatism. Central corneal thickness measurements were taken with the Sirius topographer (CSO) after taking the average of three consecutive measurements. According to these two different divisions, each three groups were compared with relation to mean central corneal thickness values, using an ANOVA analysis.
Results:
A retrospective review of 201 chart records of patients was carried out. Mean age of the patients was 32.9±9.7 (range: 20-79). The mean spherical and cylindrical refraction values were 3.9±2.59 (range 0-11.50) and 1.78±1.76 (range 0-7.50) respectively. The mean central corneal thickness was 538.9±26.0 (range: 460-640). No relationship was found between pachymeter and being myopic, hyperopic or having astigmatism. On the other hand, there was a statistical correlation between the rule of astigmatism and pachymeter. The central corneal thickness of the eyes with against-the-rule astigmatism was found to be higher than eyes with oblique astigmatism and with-the-rule astigmatism (p=0,032 and p=0.009 respectively).
Conclusions:
Although there was no difference among myopic, hyperopic and mixed astigmatigmatic cases with relation to central corneal thickness, central corneal thickness was higher in cases with against-the-rule astigmatism. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
