Purpose:
To analyze wave-front performance, higher order aberrometries and Point Spread Function (PSF) depending on the pupil diameter (4 and 6 mm) produced by the different lenses that we have compared.
Setting:
The intraocular light scattering and higher order aberrations due to different types of optics may lead to poor retinal image quality and undesirable symptoms such as glare, halos, reduction of contrast sensibility, etc. Some scientific studies published recently did not consider internal aberrations separately and we found interesting analyzing them.
Methods:
We have assessed the possible internal aberrometries induced by intraocular lenses in three different groups. The lenses used were one monofocal lens (Acrysof SN60AT® de Alcon Laboratories) and two different premium lenses (refractive M-Plus LS-312®MF30 de Oculentis and apodized diffractive ReStor®SNAD1, Alcon Laboratories).
All 52 patients underwent phacoemulsification procedure by the same surgeon without any incidence. The surgeon selected the multifocal IOL, which he believed would most accurately meet the patients needs. Finally, 25 AcrySof ®SN60AT, 16 M-plus® LS-312 and 11 ReStor® SNAD1 were implanted.
So as to study them we have used the wave-front analyzer KR-1W Topcon® (Topcon Corporation®) based on the aberrometric analysis by Hartmann-Shack.
Results:
The mean best-corrected visual acuity was similar in all three groups of IOLs. Higher order aberrations were significantly higher in the M-plus® group, especially in the 4 mm pupil diameter analysis.
When analyzing higher order aberrations separately coma values resulted higher in the M-plus group, both at 4 and 6 mm pupil diameter. It is important to say that is thanks to its coma that the M-plus® has a good depth focus.
The spherical aberrations and induced astigmatism were similar in all three groups; and we found that the better the PSF resulted, the better the Sthrel came up to be.
Conclusions:
In conclusion, the assessment of monofocal and multifocal IOLs performance using wave-front analysis provides useful information of the internal aberrometries induced by these lenses. In our study we found higher order aberrometries in the M-plus® lens, due to a higher rate of coma; and lower levels of all aberrometries in the 4 mm pupil group than in the 6 mm one. The ReStor® was the lens with a better internal aberrometric profile in our study. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
