Abstract Details

Purpose:

To examine?the ocular higher-order aberrations and sub-surface nanoglistenings of the implanted IOLs with different materials 10 years after surgery.

Setting:

Eguchi?Eye?Hospital, Hakodate?,Japan

Methods:

Patients who underwent standard phacoemulsification and implantation with hydrophobic acrylic IOL , poly?methyl methacrylate? (PMMA) IOL?or silicone IOL and could be periodically followed up at least 10 years, were eligible for the study. Ocular higher-order aberrations?were?measured with 4mm pupil size using KR-1W wavefront analyzer (TOPCON). Sub-surface nanoglistenings(SSNG) was examined with the slit-lamp photographs and graded into four categories. Other outcome measures were best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and contrast sensitivity.

Results:

Forty-three eyes of 25 patients?were?evaluated 12.3±2.1 years postoperatively. There were no statistically significant differences in internal higher-order aberrations among 3 groups. The rate of SSNG was?statistically significant higher in acrylic IOL than the other 2 IOLs. SSNG was absent in PMMA IOL. There were no statistically significant differences in BCVA and contrast sensitivity among 3 groups.

Conclusions:

The degree of SSNG was different depend on the IOL material, but we couldn’t find any differences in internal higher-order aberrations, BCVA and contrast sensitivity. So, this study suggests that?SSNG in this stage showed no significant adverse effect on visual function of the patients. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
