Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate change in stereopsis in patients following monocular implantation of a small aperture corneal inlay for treatment of presbyopia.

Setting:

Private Practice

Methods:

Prospective, non-randomized study of monocular implantation of a small aperture inlay in a series of 60 emmetropic presbyopic patients. Inclusion criteria were age of 45 - 60 years with a spherical equivalent between + 0.50 to -0.75 D, an uncorrected near visual acuity between 20/40 and 20/100, and a best corrected distance bilateral VA ? 20/20 in both eyes. Stereopsis was assessed using the Optec Vision Tester stereo test. Visual acuity was also evaluated.

Results:

Mean patient age was 53 (range: 45-60). There was no significant change in stereopsis in the inlay eye, with a mean pre-op measurement of 36.1 arc seconds and a post-op value of 35.5 arc seconds. In the inlay implanted eye, 100% of patients achieved 20/25 or better uncorrected distance visual acuity, and 85% achieved J2 or better uncorrected near visual acuity.

Conclusions:

In this series, monocular implantation of a small aperture corneal inlay resulted in good postop near and distance acuities, with no effect on stereopsis.
