Clinical outcomes in patients after posterior capsule polishing and Nd: YAG laser posterior capsulotomy

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate clinical outcomes in patients who underwent Nd YAG laser posterior capsulotomy or posterior capsule polishing due to Elschnig pearls posterior capsula opacification.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, 3rd Medical Faculty, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic.

Methods:

20 eyes were enrolled in a single center comparative study. Group A (n=10) underwent NdYAG posterior capsulotomy due to Elschnig pearls posterior capsula opacification. Group B (n=10) underwent posterior capsule polishing with the use of aspiration canula. Following parametrs were analyzed: UCVA, BCVA, intraocular pressure (IOP), endothelial cell count (ECC), central retinal thickness. All the parameters were analyzed preoperatively, 1st postoperative day and after 1 month.

Results:

In group A mean preoperative UCVA was 0,45 and increased to 0,62, mean BCVA was 0,65 and increased to 0,84, mean ECC remained unchanged, 1697. there was no statisticaly singnificant increase of IOP, we didn“t realize any increase in central retinal thickness. In group B mean preoperative UCVA was 0,18 and increased to 0,29, mean BCVA was 0,39 and increased to 0,85, mean ECC remained unchanged, 1541. there was no statisticaly singnificant increase of IOP and we didn“t realize any increase of central retinal thickness.

Conclusions:

Both methods seems to be safe and effective with improvement of visual outcomes and without any influence on the endothelium. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
