Purpose:
Experimentally evaluate the feasibility of performing ultrasound phacoemulsification procedure as a new technique for WIOL-CF® hydrogel intraocular lens explantation which could preserve the advantages of a prior small incision cataract surgery.
Setting:
Ophthalmology Department of Central Military Hospital Prague, Czech Republic
Methods:
The feasibility to explant hydrogel intraocular lens WIOL-CF® was studied on post-mortem porcine eye model. The ultrasound phacoemulsification of implanted intraocular lens was tested by standard phacoemulsification device. Temperature at the anterior chamber was continually measured by implanted thermometer probe and the cornea temperature was measured by a contactless thermometer to determine whether a thermal burn occurred during the process. This procedure was tested on different settings of phacoemulsification device and using different types of phacoemulsification needles, to find up optimal energy and tools for effective and safe phacoemulsification and removal of WIOL-CF® from capsular bag.
Results:
The measured values during experimental explantation of WIOL-CF® in porcine eye model will be presented as a chart including the time required for phacoemulsification, temperature in anterior chamber, temperature of cornea. All measurements were done for different settings of device as level of energy used, mode of device (pulse/sec), type and size of needle for phacoemulsification.
Conclusions:
The ultrasound phacoemulsification procedure was successfully used for explantation of hydrogel intraocular lens WIOL-CF® on porcine eye model. The procedure was quick and easy to use. Measured temperatures did not cause thermal burn during process. The experimental model results show promising way which we would like to study in future. This new approach is by our meaning possible also thanks to unique material with high content of water similar to natural crystalline lens which is used for WIOL-CF® production.
