Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare clinical outcomes of femtosecond laser assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and foldable phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation for moderate myopia.

Setting:

Private practice

Methods:

Forty-six myopic patients were randomized to bilateral femtosecond LASIK or bilateral Artiflex pIOL implantation. Refraction, uncorrected (UCVA) and corrected (CDVA) visual acuity, contrast sensitivity (CS), corneal endothelial cell count (ECC), rate of enhancement, and complications were compared.

Results:

Twelve months after surgery, there were no statistically significant differences in spherical equivalent (p=0.19), or UCVA (p=0.28), whereas CDVA was better in the pIOL group (p<0.001). The percentage of eyes gaining lines of CDVA was significantly higher in the pIOL group (50.0% versus 8.7%; p<0.001). Contrast sensitivity was better for the Artiflex pIOL group. The LASIK group showed a mean increase in ECC of 105 ± 77 cells/mm2, whereas the pIOL group showed a mean decrease of 266 ± 42 cells/mm2 ( p<0.001). Five (10.9%) eyes in the LASIK group and 8 (17.4%) eyes in the pIOL group needed enhancements (p=0.37). There were no serious complications in any group

Conclusions:

Correction of moderate myopia with pIOL implantation resulted in better CDVA and CS in comparison with femtosecond LASIK, with similar predictability and efficacy for both techniques. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
