Purpose:
To describe the disastrous course of a Fusarium keratitis in a healthy contact lens wearing woman after a trauma.
Setting:
Admission to our hospital on day 17 from the onset to day 79: the day the eye was enucleated.
Methods:
Description of all medical and surgical treatment in the course of the Fusarium keratitis.
Results:
The keratitis was untreatable since the fungus was totally resistant to any anti-fungal drug. Eventually the eye was enucleated.
Conclusions:
A decision to perform a keratoplasty should be taken earlier when a fungus is the cause of a keratitis, especially when the infiltrate is already located deep within the cornea and is spreading. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
