Purpose:
To evaluate the effectiveness of the preoperative and postoperative addition of topical diclofenac to chloramfenicol/dexamethasone, comparing the corneal and foveal changes as well as visual acuity at a three time point follow-up in patients undergoing uneventful phacoemulsification cataract surgery.
Setting:
1st Department of Ophthalmology, University of Athens, Athens, Greece
Methods:
Patients were randomized to: i) chloramfenicol 0.5%-dexamethasone 0.1% one drop four times/day (n=41) and ii) chloramfenicol 0.5%-dexamethasone 0.1% one drop four times/day plus diclofenac 0.1% one drop three times/day (n=38). Patients in the second group also received diclofenac 0.1% (one drop three times/day) for three days prior to surgery. The topical treatment was administered for 28 days after phacoemulsification. On postoperative days 1, 14 and 28, best corrected visual acuity measurement, macular thickness, endothelial cell density and central corneal thickness were measured.
Results:
There was not a statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of central corneal thickness, endothelial cell density, macular thickness and visual acuity at the three time points of the follow-up.
Conclusions:
The addition of diclofenac did not seem to offer any additional benefit in terms of postoperative inflammation and cystoid macular edema after uneventful phacoemulsification cataract surgery, as corneal and foveal changes did not differ between the two groups. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
