Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the safety, efficacy, predictability, and refractive outcome of implanting Ophtec Artiflex Toric phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) in eyes with keratoconus and thin cornea.

Setting:

Ocular Visió Clinic , Barcelona ,Spain

Methods:

Three eyes one keratoconic patient and two from a suspected keratoconus patient had undergone Iris Fixation tPIOL implantation under topical anesthesia. The keratoconus suspected patient underwent bilateral simultaneous Artiflex tPIOL imlantation. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), refraction, corneal topographic and biomecanical findings, adverse events, and postoperative complications were noted.

Results:

No intraoperative or postoperative complications were observed. An improvement in UCVA and BSCVA was found after Artiflex Toric Phakic IOL procedures in all eyes. All eyes were emmetropic within 1 diopter (D), whereas the mean manifest refractive spherical equivalent refraction reduced from -3.62+/- 0.622 D (range, -3.125 to -4.50 D) to 0.42 D (range, plano to -0.35 D).

Conclusions:

The implantation of Artiflex iris-fixated tPIOLs in patients with stable keratoconus or biomechanically suspected cornea for correction of astigmatism and myopia is safe, predictable, and effective.
