Purpose:
To study the changes in refractive error and therapeutic outcome in patients with myopia and recurrent corneal erosion, who received standard spherical photorefractive keratectomy.
Setting:
retrospective , noncomparative case series.
Methods:
The medical records were reviewed of patients treated for recurrent cornea erosion with standard photorefractive keratectomy which was performed with a VISX IR excimer. at a single institution from July, 2007 to July 2011. The clinical features, precipitating factors, adjuvant therapy and therapeutic outcome were analyzed. All eyes underwent videokeratography performed pre- and postoperatively using either the Orbscan II .
Results:
Sixteen patients were included , age ranged from 23 to 44 years old (average 34.09± 6.21), mean follow-up time of 25.35±16.84 months (range, 7-56 months). Mean pre- and postoperative spherical equivalent was -5.5± 6.24D (range -1.75 to -7.75D), and -0.6D ± 0.81 (range -0.25 to -1.75D) , best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was -0.18 ± 0.13 logMAR and 0.03±0.05 logMAR, respectively. This improvement
in BCVA was statistically significant. Two patients (8.3%) had recurrent painful symptoms . The mean gain in Snellen lines was 2.1 ± 2.4.
Conclusions:
Standard photorefractive keratectomy is an efficient and feasible surgical option for patients with recurrent cornea erosion to gain the maximal interests from single operation. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
