Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual outcome after binocular implantation of Tecnis ZMB00 diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) three months after surgery.

Setting:

Clinic of Ophthalmology, Pomeranian Medical University, Szczecin, Poland

Methods:

Tecnis ZMB00 diffractive multifocal IOLs were implanted in 30 eyes of 15 patients (11 women, 4 men, mean age 53.4 years) during cataract surgery. The second eye was operated one month after the first one. Three months after surgery binocular UDVA, UNVA and UIVA (logMAR), contrast sensitivities (CS), spectacle independence, subjective symptoms and patients’ satisfaction (TyPE Questionnaire) were assessed.

Results:

The mean binocular UDVA and UNVA resulted respectively –0.065 and 0.085. The average binocular UIVA equaled 0.169. Mean binocular CS photopic and mesopic distance and photopic near CS values were within the normal range. Three patients needed spectacle correction – one for near, one for intermediate, one for all measured distances. Low level of glare/halo perception was observed in 8 patients, one patient reported severe glare/halo. General patients’ satisfaction was very high ( 9.0).

Conclusions:

Cataract surgery with binocular implantation of Tecnis ZMB00 diffractive IOLs provided good visual outcome, a high level of patients’ satisfaction and spectacle-free visual function in the majority of patients, however the intermediate vision was not as satisfactory for the patients as the distance and near vision.
